Fitness Is an Infinite Game

Forget about the number of calories you just burned during your workout. What truly matters is showing up for your workouts consistently and giving them your best effort.

You don’t need a number to tell you if you did good or bad.

We should feel accomplished after each and every workout because we showed up and did our best. There will be times where we will be able to push ourselves to new levels and progress and other times where we feel like a slug. This is normal.

Consistency over the long-term beats intensity in the short-term.

Play the infinite game when it comes to fitness. Think about playing to stay in the game, not to win - because the game doesn’t end. We are building resilient bodies to last the rest of our lives.

Being able to continue working out should be one of the most important goals of training as we age.

Going from zero to one hundred as quickly as you can with heart pounding intensity and staying at your limit until you drop to the floor will NOT all of a sudden make you healthy and fit. It will likely lead you to injury.

Here are some ways to think about exercise with a long-term vision:

  • Show up consistently no matter if you feel up to it or not.

  • Keep expectations in check and embrace a growth mindset to stay positive.

  • The workout and overall program should be balanced and cater to your specific needs including exercise selection, appropriate intensity and adequate recovery.

When we embrace the idea that fitness is an infinite game we realize that twists and turns and ups and downs are normal. We just need to keep showing up because that’s what health-conscious people do.
